A move for Thomas Vermaelen is an obvious one if you are in need of steadying up your leaky defense right? No? Ok it shocked us to but The Sun are reporting that the Arsenal man is being targeted by Barcelona to shore up their ailing defense.
You can only wonder that the Catalan giants scouts have been watching a different player if they think Vermaelen is the answer, given his rather unimpressive displays in recent months. Whether it be his lack of positional sense or an apparent inability to communicate he has hardly produced performances to justify such flattering interest.
To be fair to the player he has spent several games at left back where he is more than uncomfortable, whilst history does tell us that he is a better player than what we have seen in recent weeks although whether even on full form he is the answer for Barca seems unlikely.
It is indicated that with the La Liga leaders having stalwarts Carlos Puyol and Eric Abidal nearing the end of their careers they are likely to be in the hunt for new defenders come Summer, however replacing them with Vermaelen seemingly looks like going from the Ritz to dining at Weatherspoons given the players current form.

Maybe Barca are targetting any Gunner who can cause us problems if we lose him ? But we can replace Vermaelen and the poor chap will just sit on their bench !!
I wonder what they want to use if for. In all fairness, the team has no defensive cover in the midfield. Buying him would be a gamble because he has forgotten how to play the way he used to when first got to Arsenal.
