Would a Holding and Chambers Partnership give us a true Captain and Vice-Captain in the future?

I agree that we were lacking confidence on the ball, however, Utd. played with confidence for the first half hour. I was surprised because they have been awful in recent matches. They have no new players to be enthused over and we have been improving, but it was them who fired passes all around the pitch with little organised defence from us. Their passing was more accurate which was confirmed by the match statistics on Sky. At one time possession was 73% to 22% for them.

There was one similarity between the teams and that was they had James and we had Saka, both precocious youngsters. James was represented as their secret weapon and he would be the “Go to” man for them. He was deliberately pitted against Chambers, who did have a difficult early time against him, but Chambers learns quickly nowadays, and he finished on top in that battle

In the Man Utd v Arsenal match, I agree with Mike McDonald in his excellent article that we were lacking confidence on the ball, however, Utd. played with confidence for the first half hour. I was surprised because they have been awful in recent matches. They have no new players to be enthused over and we have been improving, but it was them who fired passes all around the pitch with little organised defence from us. Their passing was more accurate which was confirmed by the match statistics on Sky. At one time possession was 72% to 28% for them.

James was represented as their secret weapon and he would be the “Go to” man for them. He was deliberately pitted against Chambers, who did have a difficult early time against him, but Chambers learns quickly nowadays, and he finished on top in that battle. Saka on the other hand, was difficult for them to handle for the whole match and he set up Aubameyang for his goal.

The fact that it equalised their goal which came from a breakaway after we should have scored and was just in time, shook them. Unfortunately, Pepe missed a simple task to score which led to their breakaway. Our midfield had begun to find their feet as well and they had begun to form some sort of contact with our defence.

I was anxious about the match at the outset when I saw that neither Bellerin nor Tierney were playing and Caballos was on the bench. My preferred duo at CB was Chambers and Holding and AMN was not playing when he was an obvious choice to nullify James. He is just as fast and athletic as James, but Emery frustrated me again with his team selection.

Xhaka was, as I expected unimpressive and if ducking to allow a free kick to hit the net, is an example of what being a captain means, then we have all been re-educated. I thought it would have been the Captain`s job to put his head in the danger zone and try to divert the kick.

Emery made changes but to tell the truth, I don`t know if that was a well – planned move because he took Torreira off, when Xhaka should have gone. Fortunately for him Luis and Sokratis were accident free this time and damage was limited.

This was a big match. We could have knocked Utd. out of the present race for 4th place. Instead they are now one of a pack of teams surrounding us. Once again, we flattered to deceive and we still haven`t won a game at Old Trafford since 2006.

This is becoming more and more like all those years passed when we looked as if we would finish in the top 2, then 3, then 4 until we have reached the calibre of the Thursday Night crowd and it is now our perpetual challenge to be among them instead of being a top dog.

We may never achieve that status again, and we shall be lucky to make the top 4 unless Emery makes a huge improvement in his team selections. We are widely regarded as having a lethal forward line and we have a bunch of youngsters who show huge promise so that our player pool is such that we should be setting the side up to win their matches and actually even expect to.  Given all of the above, I would just like to know why Emery needs 5 Captains! If he picked the right one, he would only need a Vice Captain in case of injury or loss of form. If all 5 of his Captains were selected at once, nearly 50% of the players would be looking to all of them as examples, which is nonsense. Would the whole team under Tony Adams have needed another 4 men to add to his example of what a Captain is?  Which of Emery`s 5 would they look to now for inspiration? Holding is a Captain in waiting, and Chambers would be a good Vice Captain. They have a budding relationship such as Adams and Keown enjoyed, and it benefited the team. I believe something like that should be nurtured and I think our defensive weaknesses would be strengthened accordingly

100 % Houlding will become our captain at some stage. and I hope Chambers stays for the ‘long haul’ as they are ‘proper’ Arsenal type players. still not convinced with the manager though.
