179 – Just Done It

In September it will be 25 years since Ian Wright signed for Arsenal, a couple of months shy of his 28th birthday. (To call him a late bloomer would be an understatement: he was almost 22 when he signed his first professional contract for Crystal Palace.)

George Graham came under a lot of criticism for signing Wrighty (for a then club record £2.5m). Reigning champions Arsenal already had Golden Boot-winner Alan Smith up front, and a young Kevin Campbell surging through the ranks. Wrighty quickly justified Graham’s vision by scoring on his League Cup debut at Leicester, and netting a hat-trick on his league debut at Southampton.

In his first season at Arsenal, Wright won the Golden Boot – pipping Sp*rs striker Gary Lineker to the post with a hat-trick at Highbury on the final day of the season. He went on to win a Premier League medal, two FA Cup medals, a League Cup medal and a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup medal with the Gunners.

A prolific goal-scorer, Wrighty soon set his sights on the Arsenal goal-scoring record – a feat he managed to achieve on June 13th, 1997, when he slotted home his 179th goal for the Gunners, the second goal in a hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers at Highbury.

Ian Wright went on to score 185 goals in 288 appearances, securing himself the 4th place spot in the list of Arsenal’s Greatest 50 Players.

To celebrate this Arsenal legend, Gunners Town and Exclusive Memorabilia are proud to announce the Gunners Town Exclusive Memorabilia  Competition – which offers competition entrants the chance to win an authentic signed print of the above Ian Wright photograph.

About Exclusive Memorabilia

www.exclusivememorabilia.com launched in 2011.

Unlike other companies, we ONLY sell products that have come from official signing sessions. This means that the majority of items we stock are from closed signing sessions that we organise and attend, and witness the items being signed. The remainder are bought from a handful of trustworthy companies with whom we have been dealing for a number of years, and who we know to have the same standards as ourselves.

Wrighty Signing Photo

All our signatures without exception, come from arranged signing sessions where the signee is paid a fee for their services. Many of the older players appreciate the extra funds, while current stars often have charitable foundations or favoured charities who are the beneficiaries of the fees. Because we have worked with the players and their agents for many years, they like and trust us, often recommending us to each other personally.

We never accost players outside training grounds as we don’t believe this is the correct way to do business. Furthermore, the quality of a signature from a signing session is usually much better than one grabbed outside a training ground through a car window.

We always take a photograph of the sportsman signing one of each product and we reproduce this photo on the Certificate of Authenticity. For logistical reasons it is impossible to photograph every item being signed – no company can do this – but showing that the sportsman was present and signing items is, we believe, the best way to demonstrate the legitimacy of your products.
